Introduction ================================================================== This discography-in-progress is being compiled with the assistance of David Jackman and as such will eventually represent the definitive discography of Organum/David Jackman releases to date. I must express my sincere gratitude to David for kindly affording me access to his archives and taking the time to make the many corrections/alterations/additions sorely needed in previous drafts of this discography. Any factual errors in this discography are open to correction, so please make contact if you notice anything. Information regarding quantities of tapes mentioned in Parts 8 and 9 may be subject to some slight error as no precise records were maintained for very early releases. However, the quantities mentioned are as accurate as David Jackman's memory allows. Furthermore, please inform me of any items not contained herein as they are likely to be bootlegs, or worse - fakes. Please assume that most of the items mentioned in the discography are no longer generally available so please do not enquire about availability. Also, please do not ask David Jackman for private cassette copies of any of the past releases. I hope you will find this discography informative and useful - enjoy..... Mix: The New Blockaders. Graphics: Organum. Other information: Fold-out black & white cover featuring two W.W.II American fighters with record title and artists written in a 'cuboid' text style. Sleeve flap features the words "<< Even anti-art is art & that is why we reject it >>." Labels are white on blue with a 17th centuary woodcut image. Standard white 7" bag stapled into fold-out sleeve. Originally only 250 copies were ordered, however the pressing plant accidentally exceeded that amount. David Tibet, writing in Sounds (December 1st, 1984) made this his 'single of the week' and wrote: "The voice of the new underground of the avant-garde, which means that not only is it uncommercial, but there is not a hope in hell of being able to dance to it. Involved in this is someone whom our own Winston Smith once discussed as a "boring bastard," which means that it doesn't sound like Joy Division. A true classic." 1.2: Organum - 7" Kanal (Part 1)/Kanal (Part 2) Dom Productions - DOM V7-06 (p/c, 45 rpm); Germany - 1987 Credits given: Recorded at Integrated Circuit Studios. Music: Andrew Chalk and David Jackman. Other information: Cover is black print on blue featuring an anatomical collage while labels are black on green with different anatomical collages. 1.3: Organum - 7" Drome Pt.1/Drome Pt.2 Les Disques du Soleil - SOL 7-01 (p/c, 45 rpm); Japan - 1989 Credits given: Played by Michael Prime & David Jackman. Recorded by Michael Prime. Artwork by David Jackman. Other information: Black & white cover and labels. Cover features detailed anatomical collage and intestines. 1.4: Organum - 7" Meister Nix Pt.1/Meister Nix Pt.2 Dom Bartwuchs - DOM BW LTD 75 (p/c, 45 rpm); Germany - 1989 Limited to 200 copies Credits given: None Other information: Music by Organum, mixed by Christoph Heemann. Two sided single in a plain white sleeve with a black & white diamond-shaped sticker on front featuring David Jackman artwork and the word 'ORGANUM'. Black & white labels with more classic David Jackman artwork. Track titles were to be scratched onto run-off groove, but the cutter forgot to do it. 1.5: Organum - 7" and 2x7" Iuel/Wolf Dom America - DOM USS 07 (45 rpm); USA - 1990 Limited to 300 double packs and 100 single packs Credits given: None Other information: Clear vinyl 7" in PVC bag with some copies (exact number unknown) coming with an insert giving recording information and a brief discography. The record was released as a 'Night & Day' double pack (featuring exactly the same records, but with label colours reversed, in two PVC bags taped together). It was also released as a single record in a PVC bag. The original artwork demanded black print on silver labels however the pressing plant made a complete mess of this and managed to press 400 records with silver print on a black background. Eventually 300 copies were pressed with the correct colour combination - hence the double pack release. Jim O'Rourke played guitar on Iuel (which is an old English word for 'jewel'). 1.6: Organum - 7" o/Shining Star Mermaid Records - BERT 013 (45 rpm); Germany - 1994 Limited to 440 copies Credits given: None Other information: Clear vinyl in PVC bag. A-side features colour label with artwork by David Jackman (no actual information given). Style of artwork consists of thin, alternating green and yellow sunburst radial lines with an 'anatomical' collage in the center. B-side label is black & white with the logo for Mermaid Records and track titles. o is derived from the word 'olean". 1.7: Organum & The New Blockaders - 7" Raze Pt. 1/Raze Pt. 2 Regelwidrig-Cacophon - RC002 (p/c, 45 rpm); UK - 1994 Limited to 500 numbered copies Credits given: None Other information: Black & white label and fold-out cover, plain white inner sleeve rubber stamped and numbered in black ink (promo copies numbered in red ink). David Jackman artwork features the characteristic thin sunburst radials background overlaid with stylised springs, shell forms, fire and a bowler hat. Label artworks feature a bowler hat and part of an intestine. 1.8: Organum - 7" Hibakusha Syntactic Records - SYN2 (p/c, 45 rpm); Austria - Early 1994 Limited to 50 numbered copies and 10 signed and hand-coloured/numbered copies Credits given: None Other information: 1-sided record with plain, blank, black labels. Front of the fold-out cover features a toilet on a clockwork toy tank, back cover features a bucket with the words 'Organum' and 'Hibakusha' (side-by-side) written underneath. Numbering appears on rubber stamp on inside of front cover. Signed & coloured copies were completed by David Jackman and involved colouration of the bucket on the back sleeve. Music was recorded after In Extremis and may be considered to be the 'missing link' between the early noise music and the later flute music. Reputed to have already fetched around US$120 in USA. 1.9: Organum - 7" Gloria Aeroplane Records - AR15 (p/c, 45 rpm); UK - 1994 Limited to 113 signed and numbered copies Credits given: None Other information: 1-sided record with black & white fold-out cover. Plain pastel label with David's finger print with the word 'Aeroplane' (inside an oval border) stamped in red over it. David Jackman's signature also appears, in silver ink, on label. Records were numbered in pencil with a red rubber stamp on the plain white inner sleeve. 150 copies were intended to be pressed, however severe pressing problems resulted in only 56 copies being of acceptable quality on the 3rd attempt and 57 copies on the 5th - hence only 113 copies. 1.10: Organum - 7" Lysis Aeroplane Records - AR16 (p/c, 45 rpm); UK - Early 1995 Limited to 72 signed and numbered copies Credits given: None Other information: 1-sided record in plain white sleeve with a colour Xerox 9.5cm by 7cm rectangular sticker on the front (featuring a little girl and a 1930's American diesel train over alternating red and black sunburst radials). The Japanese equivalent of 'Organum' is written vertically on the left, with 'LYSIS' written under the whole picture. Back cover features David Jackman's signature in silver with the record number stamped underneath. Plain label with 'ORGANUM LYSIS' stamped at the bottom. This track was the first ever Organum studio recording (from 1984) and had remained unreleased for 10 years. Original master accidentally destroyed. This was an export-only release with most copies (around 50) going to Japan. 1.11: Organum - 12" Kanroku Aeroplane Records - AR17 (p/c, 45 rpm); UK - Early 1995 Limited to 111 signed and numbered copies Credits given: None Other information: 1-sided record in shiny-black die-cut disco sleeve. On the music side of the record the words 'ORGANUM ROTOR' are stamped in black near the bottom of the pastel green label. The non-music side has a similar coloured label with the record number, n/83, stamped in black in the same position. 60 copies went for export. The bulk of the remainder were given away to friends. Some of the free copies had personalized, extra packaging. 1.12: Organum - 7" Arc 7" - Aeroplane Records - AR20(p/c, 45 rpm) UK - January 1996 Limited to 85 signed & numbered copies Credits given: None Other information : 1-sided record in a plain white card sleeve with an 8.5cm x 6.3cm original colour photograph stuck onto the front. The mention of Bootleg items is for interest only and in no way condones their presence. David Jackman urges anybody seeing any bootlegs (or fakes, which are worse) to please inform the author of this discography of their presence. 10.1: VERY EARLY WORKS 10.1.1: Harmony Band - Unreleased Album No title. Other information: Recorded on 13th May 1972. Musicians: Carole Finer, Diane Aldridge, Chris May, David Jackman. Recorded by Bob Woodford. 10.1.2: Scratch Orchestra - LP Cornelius Cardew: The Great Learning Deutsche Grammophon 2561 107 Germany, 1971 Credits:(unpublished, copyright: Cornelius Cardew) The Scratch Orchestra Conductor: Cornelius Cardew Producer: Karl Faust Assistant Producer: Richard V Hill Musical Adviser: John White Engineer: John Timperley Recorded at Chappell Studios, London on February 15/16, 1971 Other information: This LP was only available as part of a six LP boxed set of Avant Garde music on Deutsche Grammophon. Though David Jackman is not mentioned anywhere on the sleeve, he was an active member of the Scratch Orchestra at this point and is probably one of the massed singers. Some of the other members mentioned in the liner notes (by Cornelius Cardew) are: John Tillbury, Gavin Bryars, Michael Parsons, Howard Skempton, Michael Chant, Christopher Hobbs, and Hugh Shrapnel - each of who recruited friends, family and students to swell the ranks. 10.2: MINOR COLLABORATIONS David Jackman has contributed a few sounds to a few Nurse With Wound recordings, namely: Sylvie & Babs Hi-Fi Companion, Spiral Insana and Cooloorta Moon. The production on those pieces was entirely the work of Steven Stapleton. 10.2.1: Verdenskang - Cassette Album And It's There No track listing Label unknown - AND 20; UK - 1985 Pressing details unknown Credits given: In co-operation with: Philip Sanderson, Meat Means Bloody Murder, David Jackman. Introducing: Zena. Recorded in: London, Puerto D'alcala, The Valley Of Assisi, Wisebach. Produced by: Nigel Jacklin, 1984/85. Other information: Cover features an image of an ancient stone carving of a person. David Jackman produced a few of the sounds. 10.2.2: Mixed Band Philanthropist - LP The Impossible Humane No track listing Selektion Records - SLP007; Germany - 198? Around 300 copies were pressed Credits given: Vast amount of text on A4 insert. Other information: Painted-out record sleeve with A4 insert which features a huge list of the avant-garde/experimental groups which contributed to this record. Organum is mentioned in this insert. The 'group' is really a non-group and the record is a collage of sounds derived from all the artists mentioned on the insert. Pretty hard to identify the Organum contribution. 10.2.3: Andrew Chalk - Cassette EP Harvest A: No track titles B: No track titles Integrated Circuits Records - ICR (no actual catalogue number given); UK - 1988 Quantity manufactured unknown Other information: The A-side is a re-working and new production of the original 8-track recordings made for the two-part Organum Kanal 7" (see entry 1.2). Presented as a single long piece, the re-working includes many new sounds added by Andrew Chalk. It is no longer identifiable as an Organum track. 10.2.4: Organum/Nurse With Wound - 7" Sinister Senile E.P. A: Human Human Human (by Nurse With Wound and Organum) B: Psychedelic Underground (in memory of Luud Noma) (by NWW) Shock Records - SX 004; UK - 1990 Limited to 500 copies Credits given: B-side recorded live at the Barn. Other information: This standard (un-numbered) Shock Records release mentions Organum, however the involvement of David Jackman was minimal. Some of the sounds originated from an abandoned Organum piece. David Jackman subsequently sold the multi-track tape to Steven Stapleton who radically re-worked the piece so that the original sounds are almost unidentifiable. As such, this is not considered as an official Organum release. This is the same as entry 4.3 and one could attach the same comments to that entry as well. 10.3: BOOTLEGS/FAKES 10.3.1: Organum & The New Blockaders - Compilation Cassette Album Appearance Journey Into Pain 1. Homage To Tatlin (Pt. 1) Possibly Statutory Tapes - catalogue number unknown Other information: David Jackman has never seen this release or even heard of this piece. 10.3.2: The New Blockaders & Organum - Compilation Cassette Album Appearance Even Anti-Art Is Art...That Is Why We Reject It 1. To David Jackman's knowledge, most of the privately printed T-shirts were intended as gifts and were manufactured on that basis with David's consent. Please do not ask for any of these as they are not available for sale. The known T-shirts are: 1. Crux: Features the sleeve artwork for this LP (see entry 2.5). Sold by Silent Records, USA. 2. Meister Nix: Features the sleeve artwork for this 7" single (see entry 1.4). Sold by Silent Records, USA. 3. Approximately 30 were made. 4. Rabbit: A red T-shirt featuring a cartoon rabbit sitting on some false teeth, printed in black - as seen on the inside of the booklet of this CD album (see entry 3.2). Hibakusha: Privately printed in the UK, this high-quality T-shirt features an enlarged reproduction of the front sleeve of this rare 7" single (see entry 1.8). Around 12 were printed in total. 6. Salute: Privately printed featuring the third image (chicken head with a toy aeroplane on its head) of the Aeroplane Recordings issue of this cassette album (see entry 8.26). Very few were made. This image has also been used as a tattoo. 10.5: COMMISIONED GRAPHIC ARTWORK David Jackman has done commissioned graphic artwork for the 1993 'Third Straight Day Made Public' CD by Jim O'Rourke and Eddie Prvost (Complacency CPCD9302). David has also done the artwork for the 1992 'Charlotte Corday'/'Thalia' CD by Roger Doyle (DOM BW04/ARTWARE 06 CD). David did not do the layout for the Doyle disc, although it does use some of the sleeve imagery.
